I feel a little sheepish that I didn't get this up earlier, to also serve as an advertisement to anyone who might be interested - but I think anyone in my flist/circle on either LJ or DW probably already knows about Jukebox! Anyway. So this is my letter for the Jukebox 2017 fanworks exchange. Jukebox is my precious pet project, so I am inclined to look on anything I get as a gift through a rosy haze of joy and pride, BUT my gifts tend to be fantastic anyway. Win/win. Dear person who is reading these prompts - thank you for reading, and I hope you find them interesting without being restrictive.

Note: I'm going to come back and add links and tidy up the formatting a bit, but the prompt information will not change.

This letter relates to the [community profile] jukebox_fest fandom exchange. Sign-ups close at the end of Wednesday, EDT. If you're curious about it, please send me a message! Or just go ahead and read the rules and sign up.

Thank you for reading, would-be creator or otherwise curious person.

Excited reminder that I run a fan work gift exchange every year that is based on songs and music videos. Participants nominate to create a pool of canons from which requests and offers can be drawn. Then participants sign up, listing the things they are willing to create art or fiction or recorded fiction for, and giving prompts. Then we make stuff.

Nominations run for one more day. You don't have to nominate in order to be able to sign up. Do nominate, however, if you think that otherwise there wouldn't be anything in the tag set you cared about.

Useful links:

I love it! I am very fond of it and its participants! If you enjoy creating fiction and art, if you enjoy the gift exchange format for creative endeavours, if you have often wondered about the larger stories behind songs (or made some up for them, even knowing that is unlikely to be what the artists intended) you may come to love Jukebox too.

[aka: my 'letter' to the person assigned to create a gift for me in the Jukebox exchange, or anyone considering creating a treat for me. If you don't know what I'm talking about, consider investigating Jukebox! It's kind of a gateway drug to original fic if you're in fandom, or a gateway drug to fandom & fanworks if you write original stuff. And it's open to visual & podfic artists this year.]

Letter below! )

I thought I would have read all the stories in the collection by now; sadly, I haven't. But I have read my gifts. Twice. Three times. Maybe you should too!

Mr. Tanner's Fourth Grade Class (2622 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Big Science - Laurie Anderson (Song)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Original Female Character(s)
Additional Tags: Science Fiction, Snow and Ice

A friend sends you a link to a Youtube video. You're in the mood for some funny cat antics, so you click it. But the title to the page is not what you're expecting: Mr. Tanner's Fourth Grade Class, the banner reads.

Before you can hit the back button, the video begins to play.

There is nothing wrong with your computer. Do not attempt to control the screen.

This is a story with many layers, some obvious, some less obvious. (It is not actually written in second-person, for anyone for whom that's a turn-off.) It is mostly a story about a childhood friendship, and a particularly harsh winter, but the narrator is speaking from the present day, and has particular, odd, hopeful reasons for thinking back on that winter.

I wanted something surprising and something that used the town planning aspects of the song, and that is what I got. ^!^ Thank you very much, mystery author.

In your day this moment is the sun (300 words) by Anonymous

Fandom: One More Cup of Coffee - Bic Runga (Song), When Blackbirds Fly - Michael Franks (Song)
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Additional Tags: Triple Drabble

And a crossover between two songs I was not expecting crossed over - but once seen, it seems perfect. I always thought of "When Blackbirds Fly" as quite modern, but this has more of a Wallace Stevens feel to it. Thank you too, last-minute-under-the-wire treat giver.

Dear writer, I am excited that I get to share these songs with you, and I am looking forward to what you will write.

And for those of you on my friends list who are wondering what this is, Jukebox is my own exchange (preciousssss), year 2. It's a multi-fandom fanfic gift exchange where all the fandoms/canons are songs and music videos. You can find information about it here on Dreamwidth or here on LiveJournal or here on the Archive of our Own. (Or you can just ask me questions.) Sign-ups close at the end of the week.

Because they do not seem to exist online and they are handy if I am to request them for Jukebox. (Not yet decided.)

When Blackbirds Fly - Michael Franks (Song)

When blackbirds fly, they leave their lovers behind them... )

I am copying my prompts from the sign-up form to here: I don't have a lot else to say. I like these songs. I am really excited to see what someone comes up with for them. My prompts are loose suggestions - if you hear the song and think of a totally different story, use that. Either within my prompts or without them, I want to read a story that someone else has imagined.

I am open to various gender identities and various romantic or sexual pairings/groupings. If the song refers to a "she" or a "he", that'll be my default way of understanding the song - but you're welcome to switch it up, and I don't have any preference as to the gender of the narrator, no matter who's singing.

Prompts for Big Science, Bullet, All Mixed Up, America, I Feel Possessed, To a Hammer )
